After Edward Snowden’s 2013 surveillance disclosure, the practice of mass surveillance was called into question. Reporting based on documents Snowden leaked to various media outlets triggered a debate about civil liberties and the right to privacy in this digital age. Mass surveillance is considered a global issue.
The view on surveillance global issues made by John Oliver (HBO) is very educational and with a nice style of humour. Two very intelligent people making great points while explaining things clearly.
Snowden sacrificed a normal life to follow his conscience and reveal the truth, he is a national hero and NSA is violating peoples constitutional rights.
John Oliver has said that he’s not a journalist; only a comedian. This episode shows that he’s not right while denying his talent in combining factual information presented in a funny and understandable way. He may not be traditional journalist, but his reports are very interesting and insightful. In the interview John Oliver comes across as harsh towards Edward Snowden but just because he knows that Snowden is vastly more intelligent than the majority of Americans and often forgets that when he talks about government surveillance, so John was trying to get him to ‘break it it down’ as much as possible so the average American could care and understand about it.
